Shanghai is divided into two parts by the Huangpu River (黄浦江 huángpǔ jiāng), with the older town on the west bank known as Puxi (浦西 pǔ xī) and the brash new development on the east side being Pudong (浦东 pǔdōng). 

Areas within Puxi: 

• The Bund (外滩 wàitān) - the colonial river side of old (and reborn) Shanghai, including the Yuyuan Gardens (豫园 yùyuán) 
• Shanghai Xintiandi (???) Located at Lane 181, Taicang Road. A small pedestrianised area of the city featuring rebuilt traditional shikumen [stone gate] houses. Housing a cinema complex,mall, numerous bars, cafés and art galleries marketed towards foreign visitors and the more affluent locals.
• Shanghai/Xujiahui - Southwest part of Shanghai,  A commercial centre with huge shopping malls and large electronic malls.
• Gubei/Hong-Qiao - Close to the old international airport, a Carrefour, and with a large expat population 
• Nanjing Road - China's most famous shopping street, leading to People's Park (人民公园 rénmín gōngyuán) and Jing'an (静安 jìng ān), there are many branded shops along the street.  
• Hongkou (虹口 hóngkǒu) - home of Fudan and Tongji- the most famous university in China, plus a park and museum for famed writer Lu Xun. 

Areas within Pudong - the skyscraper-laden new financial and commercial district on the east bank of the river.

• Oriental Pearl TV Tower (????? Dongfang Minshuta ) - built in 1994, 3rd tallest in the world. Featuring 11 garish pink balls and often likened to devices ranging from hypodermic syringes to adult toys, the tower has just the same become a symbol of the new Shanghai.
• Bund Sightseeing Tunnel (north of the Peace Hotel), A more expensive way of crossing Puxi to Pudong, basically an overpriced 647m underground travellator featuring several minutes of blinking lights at Y30 a pop. It's a really fun and unique experience.

  宝山 - BǎoShān 

Modern Shanghai has three key areas of interest to the visitor. These comprise Sightseeing, Business and Shopping centered upon People's Square and along the Huangpu River.Known as "the Oriental Paris", Shanghai is a shopper's paradise. There are a few places you shouldn't miss up, Nanjing Road. Huaihai Road intrigues those with modern and fashionable tastes, while Sichuan North Road meets the demands of ordinary folk. In addition, Xujiahui Shopping Center, Yuyuan Shopping City.

Shanghai's abbreviations in Chinese are Hù (沪) and Shēn (申).The city has had various nicknames in English, including "Paris of the East", "Queen of the Orient", "Pearl of the Orient", Shanghai continues to grow and prosper meeting the aspirations of the 21st century while retaining its proud traditions of service and hospitality. The Oriental Pearl TV Tower, Jingmao Mansion and Pudong International Airport are the modern symbols of an international metropolis while the Shanghai Museum, Shanghai Grand Theatre and Shanghai City Planning Exhibition Center are evidence of the extensive and deep passion of a great city that extends a warm welcome to friends from all over the world.
