Chaozhou is located in the north of the delta of the Hanjiang River, which flows through the city. It was originally named Chaozhou - literally "Tide Prefecture" - in the Sui Dynasty (591 AD).

Chaozhou Climate:
Crossed by the Tropic of Cancer in the central part of its continental portion, tropical and sub-tropical Guangdong has a climate marked by high temperature and plentiful rainfall. It has the highest mean temperature of 28¡ãC in July (the hottest month in a year) and 13oC in January (the coldest month in a year). The greater part of the province has a mean annual precipitation of about 1,500-2,000 mm. and 140-160 rainy days. The coastal regions are frequently visited by typhoons between July and August.

Chaozhou Economy:
In recent years a lot of new industries have emerged. Chaozhou is also one of well-known agricultural high production zones in China, with its fine tradition of intensive cultivation and attacking great importance to agricultural science and technology. Many of agricultural and sideline productions gain a great reputation in world markets.
The economic features are outstanding, with solid industrial foundation. Private economy is thriving, and the city is one of the fast developing areas in private economy. In the end of 2001, the value of the industrial output of non-public ownership was 31 billion yuan, making 90% of the total value of industrial output of the City. Development of new hi-tech, application of it to reforming the traditional industries has brought about an industrial system with ceramics, food, clothes, electronics, metal ware, printing and plastics as the leading industries. The porcelain resistance insulators of Three-Rings Group and wedding gowns and evening dress of Mingrui Group are at the top of the markets at home and abroad. Three Highs farming has developed rapidly. The main leading industries like grain, fruit, tea leaves, aquatic products, husbandry, and flowers have been developed with 11 ten thousand mu cultivation bases and demonstration bases, nurturing 11 agricultural leading enterprises at the municipal and provincial levels, and 5,000 cultivation households of farmers. Chaozhou City is well-known for high-yielding of grain, Fenghuang Dancong tea, Lingtou white leaf tea, pickles of Jindu, baked eels of Huahai and Chaozhou tangerines. There is a high degree of export-orientation. There are 168 enterprises that own the right of engaging in export and import business. In 2001, the total amount of export in foreign trade was US$508 million, an increase of 16. 3%. The City has established ties with 117 countries and areas.
